EMPA
Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology
Ueberlandstrasse 129
8600 Dübendorf / Switzerland
Empa is the interdisciplinary research institute for materials science and technology development of the ETH Domain. Our mission is to develop materials and technologies for a sustainable future. Empa’s R&D activities link applications-oriented research to the practical implementation of new ideas in the areas of nanostructured, “smart” materials and surfaces, environmental, energy and sustainable building technologies, cleantech applications as well as biotechnology and medical technology.
Empa will lead the WP3 and will together with Paperplat develop an innovative process that combines mild alkaline & enzymatic treatments for the delignification of biomass. Empa will also prepare cellulose fibers and nano(lignin)fibers (WP3), work on fiber-based materials and machine learning (WP4), materials characterization (WP5) and contribute to the other WPs.
"At Empa, we will develop a new biorefinery process that will redirect the use of residual biomass to longer-lasting materials as cellulose pulp and lignin. Our process is scalable, allows for diversification (more actors) and reduces greenhouse gases emission (e.g. CO2). As it preserves the high quality of cellulose fibers and lignocellulosic polymers, it will open new avenues for creating sustainable materials and business opportunities for packaging, textile and composite industries (automotive, 3D printing)."
