From Feedstock to High-Value Products: Maximizing Biomass Potential

Why Bio-LUSH - and Why Now?

Our mission is to overcome obstacles in establishing a sustainable and thriving biofibrous industry in Europe. We focus on ensuring a sustainable biomass supply, developing eco-friendly and scalable processing methods, optimizing biomass value chains, and embracing circular design principles for decarbonization and reduced eutrophication.

Develop an Environmentally Friendly Process

Develop a flexible and eco-friendly process for converting high-value biomass from secondary sources like hemp, forest residues and other green, underexplored biomass feedstocks.

Quantify Reduction in Fossil Resource Reliance

Measure the impact of biobased fibers on reducing reliance on fossil resources in European manufacturing, with specific focus on packaging, textile fibers, and automotive industries.

Demonstrate Market Entry Potential

Fast-track market entry by converting Bio-LUSH (nano)fibers into high-value materials. Shorten biofibrous product time-to-market to 2-4 years for accelerated commercialization.

Engage Stakeholders in the Transition

We strive to actively engage citizens, primary producers, industries, and the scientific community in the transition to a biofibrous economy.

From Feedstock to High-Value Products: Maximizing Biomass Potential

About Us

The Bio-LUSH project extracts high-quality fibers from underexplored European plant resources such as forest residues, marine plants, and weeds. These fibers are used in sustainable bio-based products such as textiles, food packaging, and reinforced composites. The project revitalizes rural areas, promotes the European fibrous bio-economy, and contributes to decarbonization and reduced eutrophication.

Objectives

Our objectives include developing an eco-friendly process for converting high-value biomass from secondary sources, such as agricultural by-products and forest residues. This cost-effective process reduces transportation emissions and allows for regional material collection. We aim to scale up biofibers that meet specific manufacturing needs and demonstrate their market potential in textiles, food packaging, and composites. By quantifying the reduction in fossil resource reliance and shortening the time-to-market for biofibrous products, we de-risk future investments in biobased resources and manufacturing. Additionally, we will establish a comprehensive dataset of sustainable fibers and actively involve stakeholders in the transition to a biofibrous economy.

The production of advanced nanofiber-based materials relies heavily on specific processing techniques and conditions. In the development of Bio-LUSH products, we will leverage established manufacturing processes and aim to utilize existing equipment and investments. We will focus on exploring the exceptional potential of water-based processing and formulations, incorporating biobased components. Additionally, energy-efficient processing techniques such as melt compounding, water-assisted spinning/coating/casting, and 3D printing will be investigated to enhance the efficiency of the manufacturing process.

The demand for sustainable circular products and operations is growing rapidly at national, European, and international levels. To effectively address this, the CBE JU aims to propel biobased innovation forward and overcome obstacles through the development of zero pollution and zero-waste production methods. The focus is on creating eco-designed bio-based products that are either reusable/recyclable or compostable/biodegradable under specific conditions. Additionally, the goal is to explore the diverse functionalities of biomass and develop new bio-based products. The Bio-LUSH project will showcase a range of these products to demonstrate the vast potential of biobased innovation.

Bio-LUSH's Impact

We aim to improve effectiveness, lower expenses, boost profits, and offer industries valuable tools for decision-making by introducing novel products and business processes to the market. Our approach focuses on extracting fibers from low-value biomass in a cost-efficient manner, thereby supporting the sustainable use of resources. Additionally, by facilitating the transfer of technology, we encourage the decentralized refining of biomass, bringing economic advantages to rural areas and underutilized marginalized lands. Our overall influence spans across multiple sectors, fostering innovation, economic expansion, and environmental sustainability.

Boosting European Bio-Based Sector Competitiveness

Enhancing European bio-based sector competitiveness through sustainable feedstock processing for textiles, packaging, and automotive applications.

Decreasing CO2 Emissions and Influencing Policies

Decreasing CO2 emissions, improving policies and decision-making, raising consumer awareness, and influencing EU policies and action plans.

Harnessing Bio-Based Fibers for Green Solutions

Utilizing bio-based fibers in composites reduces greenhouse gas emissions, offsets fossil fuel use, and enables carbon stocking in long-lasting products with negative net emissions.

Introducing New Products and Processes

Introducing new products and processes, increasing efficiency and profits while driving decentralization of biomass refining for economic benefits in rural and marginal areas.

Rethinking Policy Impact

Bio-LUSH implements various strategies to influence policy change and create a supportive environment for the transition to sustainable circular biobased materials. This includes building coalitions, providing technical insights, capacity building for advocacy, utilizing evidence-based approaches, and actively engaging with key organizations and initiatives. Through these efforts, Bio-LUSH aims to drive policy changes and promote the adoption of renewable biobased manufacturing solutions.

Our objective is to contribute significantly to EU strategies such as the European Green Deal, Circular Economy Action Plan, and Sustainable Product Initiative.
