From lab to pilot scale: Bio-LUSH advances fibre and nanofibre production at Empa

From 26–28 May, the Bio-LUSH consortium gathered in Dübendorf, Switzerland, for the project’s General Assembly, hosted by Empa – the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology. The meeting marked an important milestone for Bio-LUSH, as partners demonstrated concrete progress in scale up od fibre and nanofibre production, from laboratory to pilot level.

As global fiber demand continues to rise, the environmental toll of fossil-based fibers is becoming increasingly urgent. In just one year, fiber production surged from 116 million tons in 2022 to 124 million tons in 2023, with projections estimating the global market will reach 160 million tons by 2030.
